Responses to climate change
Analysis by NASA scientists shows that the average global temperature has increased by just over 1°C since 1880. More than half the warming has happened since 1975. Governments and scientists from across the world are becoming increasingly worried about the impact of climate change as the Earth warms. Some countries are already experiencing wildfires, food shortages and extreme weather events. Countries are now being urged to reduce their use of fossil fuels and produce more clean energy from renewable sources such as:
• solar cells
• solar heating
• waves
• tides
• hydroelectric power
• geothermal energy

What is hunger?
Hunger is an uncomfortable or painful physical sensation caused by insufficient consumption of dietary energy. It becomes chronic when the person does not consume a sufficient amount of calories (dietary energy) on a regular basis to lead a normal, active and healthy life. For decades, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has used the Prevalence of Undernourishment indicator to estimate the extent of hunger in the world, thus “hunger” may also be referred to as undernourishment.
What is food insecurity?
A person is food insecure when they lack regular access to enough safe and nutritious food for normal growth and development and an active and healthy life. This may be due to unavailability of food and/or lack of resources to obtain food. Food insecurity can be experienced at different levels of severity. FAO measures food insecurity using the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) shown below:
